MEXICO CITY Mexico City is the Capital of the United States of Mexico and, since its creation as Mexico-Tenochtitlan in the year of 1325 B.C., it has stood out as the economical, political, and social center of the supreme power of the Federation and its District, where the branches of government reside. It is the biggest city of the western hemisphere in both inhabitants and Gross National Product, and the second major urban settlement after Tokyo, Japan. Mexico derives from the nahuatl “Mexitli” whose meaning is "navel" or center. Mexico City is located in the center of the Mexican territory, in a basin between two mountain ranges. Mexico City is where two incomparable empires in their respective areas merge without previous contact, and where the monumental vestiges of the culture that bloomed before the arrival of the Spanish still remain. Chapultepec's Castle arose from this union, famous in the whole world like the Museum of the Major Temple and the Metropolitan Cathedral, amongst others.
Popular art and Mexican food have gained a fair reputation in the whole world and there is no better place than our city to have access to the finest museums, an intense night life which includes bars and restaurants, and spectacular shopping centers.
