This city has been a service metropolis for years, and its service providers are well known to be experts. They are also experts in the field of environmental protection, green economy and sustainable production and consumption. Berlin is the testing ground for the new e-mobility – vehicles that cleanly drive around Berlin with electrical and hybrid drives. The capital saw the first velo-rickshaws, an energy-saving combination of rickshaw and bicycle.

Berlin is one of the German cities whose centres may only be entered by cars bearing a particulate emissions sticker (and that also inspect it on a relatively autonomous basis). Berlin also provides its 3.5 million inhabitants with innovative solutions when it comes to electricity and energy providers, whether it is a question of pellet power plants or heat generation using geothermal energy. If there are architects somewhere in Germany with a wealth of experience in energy-saving construction, and who commit their courageous fantasies to the drawing board, then Berlin is one of their capitals. 

Berlin, together with the surrounding state of Brandenburg, is also one of the nation's leaders when it comes to the use of solar, wind and bio-gas energy. Research has a clear goal: innovations must also be economically viable.

So where else than in Berlin does it make sense to think about how wholesale markets can operate in an ecologically meaningful way, that is to say sustainably and profitably, in the future...?
